Once again, The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has surpassed its standard of excellence with its newest production Billy Elliot.
The musical centers around an 11-year-old boy, the titular Billy Elliot, from Northern England, who is the son of a coal miner. His life changes when he accidentally finds himself observing a ballet class, and the dance instructor, Mrs. Wilkinson, soon realizes Billy’s potential as a dancer. Meanwhile, the coal miners are staging a strike, with which Billy’s father and brother are involved. Billy must face the disapproval of his close-minded family, the strains of poverty, and the loss of his mother as he prepares for the biggest opportunity of his life: an audition for the Royal Ballet Academy.
Not having seen the musical before, I did not know what to expect. The stellar dancing, great music by Elton John, and moments of comedy quickly convinced me of the musical’s merit. Nicholas Dantes, 14, from Vernon Hills, Illinois, starred as Billy, surprising the audience with a fantastic voice and unbelievable dance technique. Joe Cassidy (Billy’s father) and Elizabeth Dimon (Grandma) also had notable performances.
Billy Elliot allows viewers to see the world through the eyes of someone different, someone special, and the musical ends with a final message of individuality and community. I recommend this production to anyone interested in dance as a means of expression and anyone who faces judgement for being unique.
Don’t miss your chance to see this exciting production. Billy Elliot will be performed at the Maltz Theatre from December 1 to 20.
