I attended The Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s opening night of The Mousetrap this Thursday and understood immediately why Agatha Christie’s timeless murder mystery is the world’s longest-running production.
Set in a small country estate called Monkswell Guest Manor, the play follows seven people who are trapped by a snowstorm and cut off from help. Apart from the radio broadcasts about a woman’s murder in London, all seems fine — until one of the guests is strangled. Now, a young sergeant sent from town must deduce which of the guests is the killer. The suspects? Mollie and Giles Ralston, the young couple who runs the manor; Miss Casewell, the surly foreigner; Major Metcalf, the respectable soldier; Christopher Wren, the wacky and flamboyant architect; and Mr. Paravicini, the dramatic Italian. Perhaps the murderer is someone else entirely…
The Maltz’s production was both intriguing and surprising, with commendable performances by Richard Iverson (Christopher Wren) and Christian Pedersen (Sergeant Trotter). I was also impressed by the meticulously detailed set, complete with tasteful oil paintings and falling snow, which was created by scenic designer Michael Schweikardt. But if students had one reason to see The Mousetrap, it would be the plot-twist ending that no one sees coming.
